Undergraduates who study history at St Andrews have traditionally moved into a very wide range of careers on graduating. Some stay in academic life, perhaps proceeding via a postgraduate training degree to doctoral study either in St Andrews or at another university.
The School of History offers the following research degrees: PhD (Doctorate), normally of three years duration leading to a thesis of no more than 80,000 words and an oral examination. MSt (Res), a one-year research-based Masters degree. You will engage in a full-time research project and write a dissertation of no more than 30,000 words.
The dissertation must consist of between 10,000 and 12,000 words of English prose on a topic agreed between the student and an appropriate member of staff (who acts as supervisor). The topic does not have to relate to work covered in previous Honours modules, though it may be helpful to the candidate if it builds on previous work.
